PROJECT OVERVIEW

Pier Pavilion is a prominent addition to the Barangaroo foreshore in Sydney — a part of the city’s broader waterfront renewal initiative. Designed as a civic gathering point, the structure sits directly on the harbour’s edge, where it is continuously exposed to rain, salt spray and coastal winds. A defining feature of the pavilion is its terrazzo cladding, embedded with oyster shells sourced from Crown Casino restaurants within the Barangaroo precinct.  

MATERIAL CHALLENGE

The marine-facing location required more than aesthetic consideration. The terrazzo facades needed a protective treatment that could stand up to salt, moisture and airborne contaminants without compromising the material’s natural appearance.

To address these demands, Stain-Proof 40SK Consolidator & Water Repellent and Premium Impregnating Sealer were specified. This combination was chosen for its ability to provide both deep substrate consolidation and long-lasting invisible surface protection — essential in preserving both the structure and finish in a highly exposed environment. 

PROTECTIVE STRATEGY

 A two-stage system was implemented across all cladding panels: 

•     Each panel received two coats of Stain-Proof 40SK Consolidator & Water Repellent, strengthening the material internally prior to installation 
•     Once installed, two coats of Stain-Proof Premium Impregnating Sealer were applied on-site to create a barrier against water, salt and environmental pollutants. 

This approach delivered targeted protection aligned to the project’s coastal context. 

 PROJECT OUTCOME 

At Pier Pavilion, the sealing system played a critical role in preparing the facade for long-term exposure to a marine environment. The combination of Stain-Proof 40SK Consolidator & Water Repellent and Premium Impregnating Sealer provided both deep material consolidation and surface-level protection, ensuring the terrazzo panels remain structurally sound and visually consistent over time. The result is a robust, low-maintenance finish suited to one of Sydney’s most exposed public areas.
